7 Social Media Do's and Don'ts

Updated: Sep 30, 2018

Create a social media strategy for your business platforms with these tips that will help you grow a following that actually is invested in you and your brand.

Social media can be a confusing beast, with apparent rules and regulations that seem obscure and always changing. While most people are perfectly (or at least somewhat) capable of managing their personal social media platforms, when it comes to business pages and social media marketing, it’s easy to get confused. Hours of effort end in a pittance of reward. Posts go unnoticed and promotions fall flat.

“Social media is about building relationships, so approach your business pages this way to earn more loyal results."

While many people like to hand over the work and strategizing to a professional (if that’s you, check out our social media services), others enjoy putting in their own blood and sweat and just need a little guidance.

So here are a seven general do's and don’ts for professional social media management. Follow these guidelines and your social standing will improve!

1.

Do Not randomly set up social platforms and then leave them inactive. Potential customers will see this inactivity and assume you’re closed, out of business, or that you don’t really care.

DO set up the social media platforms appropriate to your business and keep them fresh with your specific content. (Check out some of our other social media articles to determine which social media platform is right for your business!)

2.

Do Not mainly post about your personal rampages, life highlights, and social interests on your professional business page! This isn’t to say that you can never highlight personal accomplishments, interests, or goals, but rather that your business page should highlight things that directly relate to your business and not let personal posts hinder your message and brand.

DO keep things interesting with your unique touch, brand, and voice. Be you. Don’t be somebody else.

3.

Do Not spam post! Your content should be valuable and beneficial to viewers, not just decoration for your profile clouding up the social cyberspace.

DO post on a regular schedule, whether that's once a week, three times a week, or three times a day. Just make sure that all of your content is beneficial to your brand and followers.

4.

Do Not use grainy, blurry, or otherwise unappealing photographs, especially on Instagram! Bad photos leads to a bad reputation.

DO use professional, clean, and brand-oriented photos to add interest and appeal to your pages.

5.

Do Not spam other users and profiles with comments and requests for follow-backs.

DO follow other profiles, build a network, and engage with likes, comments, and shares in appropriate ways to help grow a community. Social media is about building relationships, so approach your business pages this way to earn more loyal results. Feel free to reach out respectfully to people and businesses you think might be genuinely interested in helping or getting help from you.

6.

Do Not use confusing, misplaced, random hashtags if your goal is to grow your following.

DO use strategic, relevant tags in order to gain the viewership of profiles who might be interested in what you have to offer.

7.

Do Not only talk about you, 100% of the time.

DO talk about topics relevant to your business and share content from other individuals and businesses in your social network that will provide beneficial information or services to current and potential followers.
